How to Install a Sew-In Weave: A Beginner-Friendly Guide
Learn how to create a clean, secure sew-in foundation while protecting your natural hair underneath.
A sew-in weave is one of the most popular protective styling methods because it offers versatility, longevity, and the ability to keep your natural hair tucked away between installs. With proper preparation and maintenance, a sew-in can typically be worn for several weeks while giving you the freedom to enjoy straight, wavy, curly, or customized styles.
What You’ll Need
- 2–4 hair bundles, depending on length and desired fullness
- Curved weaving needle and weaving thread
- Rat-tail comb
- Hair clips or pins
- Edge control or styling gel
- Sharp scissors
- Braid spray or lightweight leave-in conditioner
- Optional braid net or weaving cap
Wash & Condition Your Natural Hair
Always begin with clean, thoroughly conditioned hair. Shampoo, deep condition, detangle, and completely dry your natural hair before creating the braid foundation.
Installing extensions over damp hair can trap moisture beneath the weave and contribute to odor, irritation, and unwanted scalp buildup. Your hair and scalp should be completely dry before moving forward with the install.
If you moisturize or oil your scalp before installation, keep the product lightweight. Heavy oils and creams can create buildup underneath the sew-in and make cleansing more difficult.
Create Your Cornrow Foundation
A smooth sew-in starts with a flat, secure braid pattern. Cornrow your natural hair straight back or use a curved pattern that supports the final style you want to achieve.
The braids should feel secure without causing discomfort. Avoid excessive tension around your edges, temples, or hairline. Protective styling should never require painful braids.
If you plan to wear a leave-out style, section off the natural hair you want exposed before braiding the remaining hair.
Braid all of your natural hair into the foundation and complete the style with a lace closure or frontal for coverage at the top of the head.
Add a Braid Net (Optional)
A braid net or weaving cap can create a more uniform surface for attaching the extensions. It may also provide additional support between the cornrows and help distribute the weight of the wefts across the foundation. Position the net securely over the braids and trim away any unnecessary excess.
Measure Your Wefts
Starting near the nape, measure each weft against the section where it will be installed. This allows you to determine the correct placement before sewing.
Depending on your technique, you can either cut the wefts to fit individual rows or use a fold-over method to reduce the amount of cutting. Limiting unnecessary cuts can help minimize shedding and preserve the construction of the bundle.
Sew the Wefts onto the Foundation
Thread your weaving needle and begin attaching the first weft near the lowest braid. Secure the weft with consistent stitches around the cornrow or through the braid net, depending on your installation method.
Continue working upward row by row, keeping the tracks close enough to create fullness without overcrowding the foundation.
The thread should feel secure, but avoid pulling so tightly that the braids or scalp become uncomfortable.
Reinforce the beginning and end of each track with a few secure stitches. This helps keep the weft in place throughout everyday styling and maintenance.
Blend, Style & Finish
Once all of the wefts are securely installed, style the extensions according to the texture you selected. Wear them straight, curled, waved, or in their natural pattern.
If you chose a leave-out sew-in, gently blend your natural hair with the extensions. Always use a heat protectant before applying hot tools to either your natural hair or your bundles.
Finish by smoothing your edges and checking the install from every angle to ensure the tracks are covered and the style lays naturally.
How to Maintain Your Sew-In
Protective Styling Should Still Feel Comfortable
A sew-in should protect your natural hair — not create excessive tension. Persistent soreness, bumps, headaches, pulling around the hairline, or unusual scalp irritation are signs that an install may be too tight and should be addressed.
A beautiful sew-in starts with a healthy foundation — then the right hair brings the entire look together.
